Pope John Paul II and Pope John XXIII will be declared saints in Divine Mercy Sunday, 27 April 2014

Divine Mercy Sunday is celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter, which is the second Sunday of Easter, now called Divine Mercy Sunday.

According to the Cardinal Paul Poupard, the shared canonization of two popes is a unique event in a two thousand year history of the Church. Moreover, this is the canonization of contemporary popes. Holiness of both popes was immediately recognized at the time of their deaths. At the second session of the Second Vatican Council, in 1963, the participants wanted to make the canonization of Pope John XXIII by acclamation. In turn, at the funeral of Pope John Paul II in 2005 appeared a banner reading “Santo subito!” (Saint immediately)
