Today is the Feast (a Solemnity for us) of St. Dominic! St. Dominic was a dynamic preacher who changed the course of history!
Who was he?
St. Dominic (1170–1221), born in Caleruega, Spain, was the founder of the Order of Preachers, better known as the Dominicans, and played a pivotal role in shaping medieval Christianity. Convinced that truth must be preached with both clarity and compassion, he devoted his life to combating heresy—particularly the Albigensian movement in southern France—through informed, persuasive preaching rather than coercion. By combining a life of poverty with rigorous theological study, Dominic forged a new model of religious life that blended the contemplative spirit of the monastery with active engagement in the world. His order became a powerhouse of theological scholarship, producing figures like St. Thomas Aquinas, and contributed to the intellectual and pastoral renewal of the Church. Dominic’s legacy endures as a testament to the power of truth, study, and charity in transforming both the Church and society.
We remain indebted to St. Dominic, without whom we wouldn't exist today! May God continue to call Dominicans to his vineyard, especially also to our Congregation and Province.
Holy Father Dominic, pray for us!
