The Lord Alone
When temptations come as they often will
Let not your heart be frightened by the chill
Do not submit to a sinful thrill
Fear Him who has power to cast into Hell.
He came like us in all things but sin
That a new creation might begin
For our bodies and souls He bled to win
A People peculiarly His own, remade in Him.
“Command these stones be loaves of bread--“
Satan hissed but then Jesus said:
“Not on bread alone are all mouths fed,
But on every word from the mouth of God--the Head.”
“Throw yourself down, for Angels will lift you--
Your foot will not break, Angels will support you!”
And wiser than he, Jesus’ words spoke true:
“Put the Lord to the test, you shall not do.”
Then taking Him up to a very high mount
Tempting provision, presumption, pride and power surmount
“All these kingdoms will be yours to count!”
“Ah, but the Lord God alone shall you worship and serve--the Living Fount!”
